LEAPs After School Program

LEAPs is an after-school academic enrichment program focused on reducing the achievement gaps in all areas of S.T.E.A.M. (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts and Math) for minority and low-income students attending one of the five inner-city elementary schools in Hamilton County. Our target opportunity zone schools include Barger Academy of Fine Arts, Calvin Donaldson Environmental Science Academy, East Lake Elementary, Orchard Knob Elementary, and Woodmore Elementary. Each school serves a high minority population (75% African American and 18% Hispanic) and faces severe poverty; 96% of students are low income and receive free or reduced lunch. Sadly, an African-American or low-income student in our target schools is three times more likely to score below proficient in reading and math than a Caucasian peer on the T-CAP (Tennessee Comprehensive Assessment Program). This program was established to improve state standardized test scores and introduce students to a variety of careers in S.T.E.A.M.

The Urban League LEAPs After School Program has made a tremendous difference in our community for over a decade. It provides an additional 12 to 15 hours of hands-on instruction in S.T.E.A.M. each week at school sites or other community locations serving our target schools (including recreation centers and the Urban League building). This program meets four days a week for three hours a day during the academic school year. We serve over 200 students each year with the help of highly qualified teachers to facilitate interactive, hands-on LEAPs curricula. Our after-school program helps students grow academically, socially, and emotionally, helping to not only improve their grades but their confidence, too. School is right around the corner.
