About the Urban League of Greater Chattanooga: Economic Empowerment:
- More than 400 individuals gained unsubsidized, full-time jobs
through employment training and workforce development programs last year
- As a result of workforce development programs, more than $6.5
million in wages were invested in Chattanooga’s economy in 2005
- During April, more than 2200 individuals filed income taxes at Urban
League sponsored tax assistant sites generating more than $2.5 million in
tax refunds returned to Chattanooga’s economy
- 150 people learned financial literacy and wealth
building through an investment seminar in February
- $16,000 was raised in December to help rebuild the Urban
League of Greater New Orleans following the Hurricane Katrina devastation
Public Education and Family Engagement
- 418 students received 200 additional hours of academic instruction from
the Urban League’s supplemental education programs The Street Academy and
21st Century Community Learning Centers
- Hundreds of phone calls were made to parents throughout the
school year to keep them abreast of their child’s academic and social progress
- Enrichment programs engaged youth in a variety of visual and
fine arts, athletics, and social development
- 3000 Scholastic books were distributed to families with children in Hamilton
County Schools to encourage parents and children to read aloud at home
