How to become a VITA Volunteer

What will you be doing?

Volunteering for VITA.  VITA stands for Volunteer Income Tax Assistance Program.  You will be trained and certified for preparing Federal Income Tax Returns for low/middle class individuals.

What kind of training will I Receive?

You will receive 4-day classroom training.  Once you completed the classroom training, you will be given access to our online course so you can begin an in-depth review of what you learned in the classroom at your own pace. You will be learning:  

  1. Tax Law
  2. Tax Return Preparation
  3. Tax Preparation Software

How do I become a Certified Tax Preparer?

You will be tested over the courses you study.  

Where will I be working?

You will be working at sites in

  1. Recreation facilities

  2. Southern Adventist University

  3. Libraries

  4. Shopping malls
  5. Community Centers

What days and hours will I be working?

You can have a flexible schedule.  We require a minimum of 4 hours a week. Sites are open during the week and Saturdays. Times vary, between 10am and 8pm.

What experience do I need?

  1. Basic computer skills

  2. Own transportation

  3. Many of the volunteers have a strong background in accounting, bookkeeping or previous VITA experience.  Many have no experience, but are willing to learn.

Volunteers Wanted for VITA Program:

VITA Training Program:  Volunteers needed.  Training starts in mid-August and training is held at Urban League.

Prerequisite:

  • Basic computer skills for inputting tax return information

  • Mature, Responsible individual

  • Transportation

  • Friendly, dependable and flexible

  • Willingness to share time, skills and interest

  • Pride in performing tasks completely and accurately

  • Ability to work with the public in a helpful and supportive manner.

  • Have the time to be trained to be a “Certified Tax Preparer

  • Must pass an three tests: ethics exam; Interview/Quality Review exam  and the Advance Tax Course

  • Discipline to self-study

Volunteers will receive 4-day classroom training and access to the online self-study opportunities.  There is no cost to the volunteer and they are given an online link to the tax courses and the use of Urban League’s computer lab.  We train volunteers on: tax laws, return preparation, tax software and teach you how to interview the taxpayer so that you can have the correct information to complete an accurate return.  The training is a 4-day classroom session either daytime or evening. Once you have completed the 4-day classroom training, we will direct you to the online self-study so you can begin an in-depth review of what you learned in the classroom at your own pace.  You will be tested over the course or courses you study.  All volunteers must pass the Ethic test, Intake/Interview Test and the Advance test.  We do have other advance tests you many want to take. Once you pass the tests, you are certified to prepare taxes.  You will be assigned a VITA site to volunteer at. We require a minimum of 4 hours a week, but if you can volunteer more, we certainly can use you.  You are not alone at the VITA site, you will be assigned a buddy who will help you through the process who is an experienced VITA volunteer who can answer any questions you may have.  If you are interested in volunteering for VITA, please call Urban League at (423)756-1762 and give your name, phone number and email address and let them know you are interested in volunteering for the VITA program.  You will make a difference.
