A healthier Chattanooga is a Greater Chattanooga. And healthy living has been an issue for disadvantaged people in our community for years. In fact, in 2004, over 71% of African American and Latino women were overweight or obese—which means extra risk for heart disease and stroke. Equally alarming: the epidemic of childhood obesity continues to rise, with an overweight/obesity rate of 30% for adolescents in Tennessee, leading to a lifetime of health issues. Compounding these health disparities is the growing number of uninsured individuals in our community who cannot afford the most basic health care services to support a healthy lifestyle. The Urban League of Greater Chattanooga has responded to these needs by launching three core health programs to reverse negative health outcomes for disadvantaged people. These programs are helping build a healthier and greater Chattanooga.
