Founded in 1910, the Urban League movement is the nation's oldest and largest community-based movement devoted to empowering African Americans and other underserved individuals to enter the economic and social mainstream. Civic engagement is critical to the success of this movement, bringing together leaders and decision makers—along with engaged citizens—to inspire and lead change in communities across America. The Urban League of Greater Chattanooga encourages all people to take an active role to improve the quality of life in our community through civic participation in community service projects and public policy initiatives. We support several programs to encourage responsible, informed civic participation, and these programs strive to engage and empower citizens in shaping the future of our community.
The National Urban League is celebrating its centennial in 2010 by launching a nationwide civic engagement initiative—I AM EMPOWERED—to instill a message of hope and individual empowerment to make a lasting difference. Focused on four aspirational goals for America—in the areas of education, employment, housing and healthcare—I AM EMPOWERED is galvanizing millions of people to take a pledge to commit to help achieve the goals by 2025!
As a local affiliate, the Urban League of Greater Chattanooga is challenging local citizens to sign the I AM EMPOWERED PLEDGE to become a part of a nationwide movement to create a better America for all. Click on the link below to sign the I AM EMPOWERED PLEDGE for the Chattanooga community.
