Comcast Chattanooga Awards Comcast Foundation Grant to the Urban League of Greater Chattanooga

Chattanooga Comcast awarded a Comcast Foundation Grant in the amount of $15,000 to the Urban League of Greater Chattanooga.

The Urban League received a grant to assist in continued funding its Science, Technology, Engineering and Math (STEM) Academy. This after school program is located in five Hamilton County middle schools that are considered “at risk” schools in underserved areas of Chattanooga and Hamilton County. The goal of STEM is to promote math and literary skills by using robotics as a teaching tool. STEM works with a total of 100 (20 per school) middle school students for four days/week for twenty weeks. The STEM program is unique in that it targets minority and female students in introducing them to possible careers in science and technology. The funds will be used to purchase the required course materials as well as the supplies needed to construct the robots.

“Thanks to the ongoing partnership we have with Comcast, our STEM program can continue to offer excellent educational opportunities to middle schools students in the areas of science, technology, engineering and math. Our main objective is to provide disadvantaged individuals and families with a host of resources and services that will empower them—and our friends at Comcast allow us to do just that,” said Warren E. Logan, Jr., president and CEO of the Urban League of Greater Chattanooga

East Tennessee Vice President/General Manager Valerie Gillespie states, “I am pleased to award these two Comcast Foundation grants where the funding is used to support education in Hamilton County. Education is vital in a young person’s development and the Comcast Foundation recognizes and supports the advancement of education in youth locally, regionally and nationally. Today’s youth are tomorrow’s leaders.”

The Urban League of Greater Chattanooga is authorized for operation as a postsecondary education institution by the Tennessee Higher Education Commission. Transferability of Credits Disclosure:

The Urban League of Greater Chattanooga is a special purpose institution. That purpose is empowering African Americans and other underserved individuals to enter the economic and social mainstream. This purpose does not include preparing students for further college study. Students should be aware that transfer of credit is always the responsibility of the receiving institution. Whether or not credits transfer is solely up to the receiving institution. Any student interested in transferring credit hours should check with the receiving institution directly to determine to what extent, if any, credit hours can be transferred.

Credits earned at the Urban League of Greater Chattanooga may not transfer to another educational institution. Credits earned at another educational institution may not be accepted by the Urban League of Greater Chattanooga. You should obtain confirmation that the Urban League of Greater Chattanooga will accept any credits you have earned at another educational institution before you execute an enrollment contract or agreement. You should also contact any educational institutions that you may want to transfer credits earned at the Urban League of Greater Chattanooga to determine if such institutions will accept credits earned at the Urban League of Greater Chattanooga prior to executing an enrollment contract or agreement. The ability to transfer credits from the Urban League of Greater Chattanooga to another educational institution may be very limited. Your credits may not transfer and you may have to repeat courses previously taken at the Urban League of Greater Chattanooga if you enroll in another educational institution.
