On May 16th, 2012 the Urban League of Greater Chattanooga hosted the Obesity Related Disease Prevention symposium. It was the second in a set of three strategic planning events uniting organizations, initiatives, and community leaders to build stronger communication and collaboration for collectively addressing urgent public health issues throughout the region. Participating organizations included: City of Chattanooga Parks and Recreation, The Creative Discovery Museum, Hamilton County Coordinated School Health, The YMCA of Metropolitan Chattanooga, The Trust for Public Land – Chattanooga, UTC College of Health and Human Performance, and Bike Chattanooga. Several other organizations were in attendance as well. This event was successful in collecting practical ideas and solutions to decrease obesity rates and improve the quality of life of residents in the greater Chattanooga area. These solutions will be presented to local and state politicians in the hopes of producing policies which will positively impact obesity reduction and prevention efforts in the city. The third part of the Urban League’s symposium series, on HIV/AIDS Prevention, will take place on June 26th. |
