Sisters Together: Move More Eat Better
In June of 2006, The Urban League launched a health and wellness initiative to combat the serious problem of obesity. The 12-week program aims to encourage weight loss among African American women ages 18 to 35.
Using the obesity awareness program, Sisters Together: Move More, Eat Better, the Urban League is teaching participants how to maintain a healthy weight, incorporate physical activity into their daily routine, and make healthy food choices.
In addition to creating heath awareness, a main goal of this initiative is to create a National Institute of Health (NIH) program for African American women living in urban neighborhoods that can be used as a model for other cities in Tennessee such as Nashville, Memphis and Knoxville.
The Urban League received The Planning Grant from the State of Tennessee - "Get-fit-TN". This grant will enable Sisters Together to expand its program model to cities in Tennessee such as Nashville, Memphis, and Knoxville, as well as add a diabetes regimen to its model.
Grants from the BlueCross BlueShield of Tennessee Heath Foundation, The Tennessee Urban League affiliates and Lyndhurst Foundation in Chattanooga have made this program possible.
